What is Motherboard?

A motherboard is the main circuit board of a computer that connects and allows communication between various hardware components such as the CPU, RAM, storage devices, and peripherals. It acts as a hub that ensures all parts of the computer work together efficiently.

Components of a Motherboard

CPU Socket

• The slot where the CPU (Central Processing Unit) is installed.
• Different CPUs require specific sockets.

RAM (Memory) Slots

• Holds RAM (Random Access Memory) modules.
• Usually DDR4 or DDR5 slots in modern motherboards.
• More RAM slots allow for higher memory capacity and better multitasking.

Chipset

• The chipset is a set of integrated circuits that controls data flow between the CPU, memory, storage, and peripherals.
• It consists of:
  • Northbridge (Handles CPU, RAM, and PCIe connections; now integrated into modern CPUs).
  • Southbridge (Handles USB, storage, network, and other I/O connections).

Expansion Slots (PCIe Slots)

• PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) slots allow adding expansion cards.
• Used for graphics cards (GPU), sound cards, Wi-Fi adapters, etc.
• PCIe versions (PCIe 3.0, 4.0, 5.0) impact data transfer speeds.
